About Sing Your Heart Out
Sing Your Heart Out (SYHO) is a friendly, inclusive singing project based in Norfolk.
The workshops are designed to support wellbeing through the simple act of singing together. SYHO is not a choir and it does not put on performances. Instead, it offers a space where people can enjoy songs in good company, free from judgement or pressure. Professional singing tutors lead each session, teaching by ear so that no musical background is needed. The songs range from folk and world music to traditional, modern and spiritual styles. Many participants describe the sessions as warm and uplifting, with the chance to build confidence, meet others and ease stress. Sessions are free to attend, with donations welcome.
SYHO’s story stretches back to 1862, when music was first introduced at Norfolk’s mental hospital. The idea was revived in 2004, and the first community workshops followed in 2005. Since then SYHO has become a registered charity with groups running in different parts of the county. Its work depends on volunteers who organise and support the sessions, as well as on trustees and local organising groups. Funding from donors and grants makes it possible to cover costs such as tutor fees, venues and outreach work, keeping SYHO open to everyone.
